Tackling Teen Skin: A Thoughtful and Ethical Approach

As a parent of a 14-year-old, I understand how challenging it can be to witness your teen navigate the emotional and physical changes that come with adolescence. One of the most frustrating issues for both teens and their parents is acne, a skin condition often worsened by the hormonal shifts that accompany puberty.

Teenage skin can be particularly tricky to manage, as it’s undergoing significant changes due to hormonal fluctuations and growth. While many solutions are marketed as quick fixes, I believe it’s unethical to promote expensive treatments for a condition that often improves naturally over time. It’s important to remember that acne is, in most cases, a temporary part of growing up.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that we are not insured to treat anyone under 18 with harsh chemicals, laser, or IPL treatments. However, there are still effective and supportive options we can offer to help your teen through this phase.

What We Can Offer

Our consultations are designed to provide teens with practical skincare advice, focusing on gentle products and techniques like facial massage that help improve their skin’s condition as they mature. I also collaborate with a wonderful reflexologist, Abbie, who offers treatments aimed at reducing stress and anxiety, which can also have a significant impact on skin health. Her approach promotes better sleep, another key factor in maintaining healthy skin.

Sensible Skincare for Teens

When it comes to teen skincare, the most important factor is understanding their unique needs. For example, a common concern for teens is Keratosis Pilaris, a condition characterized by small, rough bumps on the skin. Although there is no cure, it’s something they will likely outgrow. Gently exfoliating with scrubs that contain glycolic or salicylic acid can help, but it’s essential to use mild concentrations that are suitable for young, delicate skin. Hydration is also key—both in terms of skincare products and drinking plenty of water.

There is some evidence that vitamin A deficiencies can exacerbate certain skin conditions, but it’s crucial to consult with a GP before considering supplements, as vitamin A is a potent substance that must be used with caution.

Another common issue for teens is stretch marks, which can be distressing but typically fade over time. While we don’t stock specific products for this, I highly recommend Elemis Japanese Camellia Body Oil Blend as a safe, effective option for supporting skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of stretch marks. I used it throughout my pregnancies, and it’s free from mineral oils, unlike many other products on the market.

Boosting Confidence in the Age of Filters

Body makeup can be another option for teens who feel self-conscious about stretch marks or other skin imperfections. Waterproof leg makeup, for example, can be especially useful for sports or other activities where they want a confidence boost. It’s worth remembering, though, that even models and celebrities rely on body makeup, filters, and airbrushing. Social media often presents an unrealistic image of what real skin looks like, and it’s important for teens to understand that they are not alone in dealing with skin issues.

Looking Ahead

For those over 18, treatments such as collagen induction therapy and skin rejuvenation become available, offering more options for long-term skincare. In the meantime, we offer targeted facials using the Cliniccare Pure range, which includes gentle extraction treatments, pore-minimizing sheet masks, and healing sprays like Hypo21. We also use advanced tools from Bio-Therapeutic to address specific concerns in a safe and age-appropriate manner.

Remember, the journey through teenage skin troubles is just that—a journey. With the right guidance and care, your teen can come through it feeling more confident and empowered in their own skin.
