We are all influenced by the Power of Light Light has many positive effects on our bodies; it helps us to produce essential vitamin D, triggers growth, promotes wellbeing and makes our skin glow!
Phototherapy occurs naturally all around us and is based on the principle that our cells absorb light and use it fuel natural rejuvenation and repair processes. Different wavelengths stimulate different effects in the skin. We know that on-going exposure to UV light is very damaging but controlled levels of Red, Blue and Near Infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial. A celebrity skin care favourite, LED Phototherapy is the application of these beneficial wavelengths into the skin’s deepest layers to energise our cells with proven rejuvenating results. It is a natural response similar to that of plant photo-synthesis through a process known as photo biomodulation. Skin cells that are energised function better and can regenerate up to 200% faster which in turn leads to a more youthful, healthy and radiant complexion.
From the first treatment, Dermalux instantly boosts the complexion to restore vitality and glow. A treatment course offers cumulative benefits and can be targeted to specific skin concerns for the face and body with lasting and visible improvement.

Is LED Phototherapy New?
The benefits of light have been known for thousands of years, from ancient Egypt, India and China. A Danish Physician won the Nobel prize in 1903 for the research in the treatment of certain skin conditions with light. It was then many years later, that the therapeutic benefits of light were used again with other segments of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) with visible and near-far infrared wavelengths.
In the 1960’s experiments were undertaken for photobio stimulation and the benefits of red light discovered…. The first steps to treating skin conditions with LED were here!!
Initial work on the dermatological benefits was undertaken by NASA as a result of the positive effect of LED to acerbate play growth, and wound healing when under different atmospheric pressures. Light therapy is now used for a range of conditions from cosmetic to skin cancer treatment.
How does it work?
Our skin has the ability to absorb light energy and use it to stimulate or regulate essential cell processes. LED Phototherapy is the application of beneficial wavelengths from the visible and infrared part of the light spectrum which have proven skin enhancing benefits. Skin cells that are energised function better and can renew up to 200% faster accelerating regeneration and repair.

Contraindications
LED is safe, non-thermal, nontoxic and non-invasive, and to date no side effects have been reported in published literature. In the 20 years that LED has been used in the medical and beauty industry, there have been no reported incidents of adverse reactions or damage caused by LED therapy.
If the client is taking medication that increases light sensitivity there may be a temporary, slight reaction. However, these are to be flagged as a precaution not a contraindication.
Medication that causes light sensitivity may potentially allow your body to absorb more light than normal. However, because LED therapy delivers non-harmful low-level light (as opposed to UV, for example), the only side effects would be a slightly red/flushed appearance to the skin, or possibly a rash. This is temporary and will go down after a few hours.

The doctor who has prescribed the drug will ask the client not to use LED therapy until the course of treatment has been completed. It is important that this guidance is respected. However, most doctors have said that clients can start having LED therapy the day after stopping taking Roaccutane medication. This point shows again that there’s extraordinarily little risk associated with mixing the medication with LED treatments.
This strong retinol product can cause skin irritation, redness, burning, dry or peeling skin. The client can still have the treatment, but if the skin is very red and raw ask the client to reduce their usage of the Isotretinoin, then introduce LED a few days later. It is much better to recommend that the client use a topical product slowly, gaining results without causing vulnerability to the skin. If the application of Isotretinoin is reduced to every 2nd or 3rd night and LED is then introduced, good results will be gained without causing discomfort.
It’s advisable to ask clients to refrain from using the cream the night before they have LED therapy.

Caution must be emphasised for epileptic and photophobic patients especially if LEDs are pulsed.
This is a precaution as manufacturers never test equipment on pregnant woman. Our insurance does not cover the treatment of pregnant women, so before treatment can proceed the clients’ obstetrician or doctor must be made aware. The client has to sign the consultation form saying a doctor has given consent
Breast feeding is not a contraindication. However, for insurance purposes clients need to consult their GP or midwife and follow their recommendations.
Safe for Pre/Post Cancer Treatment
LED light only stimulates healthy cells and is totally safe to use on clients with cancer, increasing the healthier cells effectiveness in the fight against damaged cells. LED therapy not only stimulates skin cells, it also works on the lymphatic system and drainage, therefore helping to rid the body of toxins. Those post-cancer, or with cancer and not in the middle of treatment, can take advantage of the multiple benefits of LED therapy.
