After weeks of sunshine, warm evenings and what has felt like a properly fabulous British summer, the temperatures are finally beginning to cool.

And for me, that means one thing…

Pigmentation season is here.

If you’ve looked in the mirror recently and thought your freckles, brown patches or areas of uneven pigmentation suddenly look more noticeable, you’re definitely not imagining it.

Why does pigmentation look worse after summer?

UV exposure stimulates our melanocytes – the cells responsible for producing melanin – which is why pigmentation can become darker and more obvious during the summer months.

Some of that colour may gradually fade naturally as we move into autumn, particularly as your tan fades and your skin has less ongoing UV exposure.

So I don’t necessarily want to jump straight in and treat every brown mark we can see in September.

I like to give the skin a chance to settle, assess what we’re actually dealing with and then decide on the most appropriate treatment.

And, of course, SPF doesn’t finish when summer does. Daily sun protection remains one of the most important things you can do to help prevent existing pigmentation becoming darker and new pigmentation developing.

Summer Skin Protection
Protect your skin from harmful UV rays with SPF and a wide rimmed hat

Once the tan has gone, we have lots of options

Autumn and winter are my favourite months for working on sun-damaged, uneven and pigmented skin because we can start introducing treatments that aren’t always appropriate during periods of high sun exposure.

Depending on your skin and the type and depth of pigmentation, I may recommend:

IPL or Laser
Fantastic for targeting suitable areas of superficial sun damage and pigmentation. The aim is to selectively target excess pigment while leaving the surrounding skin alone. Not every pigmentation concern is suitable for IPL or laser, which is why consultation and assessment are so important.

Professional Peels
A lovely option for dull, uneven or congested skin. Carefully selected peels can help encourage exfoliation and improve the appearance of superficial pigmentation, texture and overall brightness.

Microneedling
Rather than directly “zapping” pigmentation, microneedling creates controlled stimulation within the skin and can be useful as part of a wider plan for improving texture, tone and overall skin quality.

Or combine treatments…

One of the treatments my clients come back to again and again is the illumiFacial®.

It combines a professional peel with Lynton IPL, allowing us to tackle several signs of photo-ageing within one treatment – particularly uneven tone, superficial pigmentation and redness – while leaving the skin looking fresher and brighter.

And this autumn we have another option…

Meet illumiSmooth™

illumiSmooth™ takes skin rejuvenation another step further by combining technologies, including fractional Er:YAG resurfacing, within a treatment programme designed to work on both skin tone AND texture.

So if summer has left you noticing pigmentation, unevenness, enlarged pores, rough texture or generally tired-looking skin, this can be a brilliant time of year to start thinking about resurfacing.

Fractional treatments create controlled microscopic areas of treatment within the skin, allowing surrounding untreated tissue to support the healing process. It’s a treatment I approach very much in my usual “low and slow” way – we’re looking for progressive improvement, not unnecessarily aggressive treatment.

What can you do at home?

Clinic treatments are only part of the picture.

What you put on your skin every day can make a huge difference to how we manage pigmentation – particularly when combined with consistent SPF.

A few of my favourites are:

CLINICCARE GLOW Range
Designed for dull and uneven-looking skin, the GLOW products are a lovely everyday option if pigmentation and brightness are your main concerns.

CLINICCARE Instant Painless Peel
One of my favourite easy additions to a home routine. It provides gentle exfoliation without the traditional sting you might associate with a peel, helping remove dull surface cells and leave the skin looking smoother and brighter.

CLINICCARE GLOW Booster
A concentrated addition for anyone specifically wanting to work on the appearance of pigmentation, uneven tone and lack of radiance.

Lynton LIGHT FADE
Another product I particularly like for pigmentation-prone skin. It’s designed to support a brightening skincare routine and is ideal when we’re working on visible areas of uneven pigmentation.

The important thing is that you don’t necessarily need all of them.

I’d much rather help you build a simple routine that’s right for your skin than sell you a bathroom shelf full of products you don’t need!

So… should you treat your pigmentation now?

Not necessarily immediately.

If you’re still tanned or you’ve recently been in strong sunshine, we may need to wait before certain laser or IPL treatments.

But now is a really good time to start planning.

Let your summer colour fade, keep using your SPF and come and see me. We can look at what’s left once the temporary summer pigmentation has settled and work out whether your skin would benefit most from skincare, a peel, microneedling, IPL, laser, illumiFacial® or illumiSmooth™.

Because autumn isn’t about undoing summer.

It’s simply the perfect time to give your skin a little attention after enjoying it. 🍂✨
