LED light therapy is one of my favourite treatments for supporting healthier-looking skin, so I’m very excited that Dermalux has launched its new LED Face Mask for home use.

There are now hundreds of LED face masks available, with huge differences in their quality, wavelengths, power and coverage.
Not all LED masks are created equally. The colour of the light alone does not determine whether a device will deliver an effective treatment. The wavelength, dose, distance from the skin and evenness of the coverage are all important.
Dermalux is a British medical-device manufacturer that has specialised in professional LED Phototherapy since 2012. Unlike many flexible masks that rest directly against the face, the Dermalux mask uses Off-the-Skin Technology™.
This holds the LEDs at an optimised distance from the skin, helping the light spread more evenly and reducing the risk of small areas receiving more light than others. The design provides up to 93% coverage of the face, including extended coverage towards the hairline.
It is also lightweight, flexible and cordless, with integrated eye guards and a simple one-button controller.

The Dermalux LED Face Mask has been created specifically for skin rejuvenation, so it does not include blue light.
Blue light at 415nm is used within other professional Dermalux devices to target acne-causing bacteria. The home mask instead focuses on red, near-infrared and deep near-infrared light to support skin renewal, visible redness, texture, firmness and radiance.
It can still be used on blemish-prone skin, but anyone looking for targeted blue-light acne treatment may be better suited to an in-clinic Dermalux treatment or the Dermalux Flex MD.

LED results are cumulative, so regular use is important. Dermalux recommends one treatment daily for optimal results.
The rechargeable battery provides approximately five to six treatments from a full charge, making the mask easy to use at home or take away with you.

It is suitable for all skin tones and can also be suitable for sensitive skin. Treatments are non-invasive and do not use UV light or damaging heat.
However, certain medical conditions and medications can make LED Phototherapy unsuitable. Always read the contraindications and safety guidance before your first treatment, particularly if you have photosensitivity, epilepsy, an eye condition or take medication that increases sensitivity to light.

I don’t see home LED as a replacement for professional skin treatments. Instead, it is a brilliant way to support your skin consistently between clinic appointments.
Professional devices such as my Dermalux Tri-Wave MD deliver a more intensive treatment and allow me to tailor the wavelengths to your individual skin concerns. The home mask offers a convenient daily maintenance option, helping you continue supporting your skin without having to visit the clinic every day.
It may also be a useful addition to a carefully planned treatment programme, although you should always follow your practitioner’s advice about when to restart LED following a professional procedure.
