Rosacea is a common, long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face, causing redness, flushing and sensitivity. It can also show as visible thread veins or acne-like breakouts. It’s often mistaken for sensitive skin, but it’s actually a condition where the skin becomes reactive and easily triggered. While it can’t be cured, it can be managed very effectively with the right treatments and skincare.

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause isn’t completely understood, but there are a few common factors I see time and time again:

  • Genetics – If it runs in your family, you’re more likely to have it
  • Overactive blood vessels – Your skin flushes easily and stays red for longer than it should
  • Skin imbalance – When the skin barrier and microbiome aren’t functioning properly, it becomes more reactive
  • Triggers – Things like sun exposure, temperature changes, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and the wrong skincare can all set it of

How to reduce flare-ups

You can’t “cure” rosacea, but you can keep it under control by being consistent with the right habits:

  • Protect your skin from the sun – Daily SPF is essential, not optional
  • Keep your skincare simple and gentle – Avoid harsh scrubs, strong actives, and anything that stings or irritates
  • Be aware of your triggers – Common ones are alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine, but everyone’s different
  • Manage stress where you can – Easier said than done, but stress is a big trigger for flare-ups

Small changes make a big difference when it comes to keeping your skin calm and stable.

The Five Types of Rosacea

Acne can manifest in different forms, each requiring a tailored approach for effective treatment. Common types of acne include:

Rosacea

Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR)

Symptoms – Persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and heightened sensitivity to skincare products and environmental factors.

Causes – Often triggered by sun exposure, heat, spicy foods, alcohol, and emotional stress.

Who it affects – More common in people with fair skin but can affect all skin types.

Papulopustular Rosacea

Symptoms - Redness accompanied by acne like papules and pustules, sometimes mistaken for adult acne.

Causes - Flare-ups can occur due to hormonal changes, stress, or skincare products containing harsh chemicals.

Who it affects – Common among middle-aged women but can affect anyone.

Phymatous Rosacea

Symptoms - Thickened, bumpy skin, particularly on the nose (rhinophyma), resulting in an uneven texture.

Causes – Chronic inflammation or untreated rosacea over time.

Who it affects – Primarily men, although it can also affect women.

Ocular Rosacea

Symptoms – Red, irritated, and watery eyes, often accompanied by a burning or gritty sensation. Swollen eyelids are also common.

Causes – Environmental factors such as wind and sunlight, as well as prolonged inflammation.

Who it affects – Can occur alongside facial rosacea or on its own.

Granulomatous Rosacea - StoryMd

Granulomatous Rosacea

Symptoms – Firm, yellowish-brown or red bumps (nodules) that give the skin a rough texture.

Causes – A less common and poorly understood form of rosacea, thought to involve immune system reactions.

Who it affects – Rare but can affect people of all skin types and ages.
